Airport's Student Council wins top national award

WEST COLUMBIA, SC -- Airport High School’s Student Council has been honored with a top national award.

The council has been recognized as a 2020 National Gold Council of Excellence by the National Student Council. It’s the fourth consecutive year Airport High’s Student Council has received the award, which is given annually to schools with an exemplary record of leadership, service and activities that aim to improve the school and community.

Among requirements of a National Council of Excellence Award, a council must demonstrate successful sponsorship and participation in activities such as leadership development and service to the school and community. Councils like Airport’s, which are awarded at the gold level, have successfully demonstrated the highest levels of leadership.

"The student leaders at Airport High School strive to meet the ELITE standard of leadership every day in and out of our building,” said Airport teacher and student activities director Daniel Bailey. Council members wrapped up Airport’s annual Camp Kemo charity drive in early March, and Bailey said members are still continuing community service work during school closures for coronavirus (COVID-19), refilling local blessing boxes and giving out take-home meals to families during drive-thru breakfast/lunch pick-ups at district schools.

I am so proud to work with these students. They make me a better teacher, mentor and person,” Bailey said.  “I am always proud to be an Eagle, but days like today make that title even better."
